As an elementary teacher for many years and a mom, one of my favorite children’s books is Oh, the Places You’ll Go! by Dr. Seuss. There is a place Dr. Seuss describes in the book as “The Waiting Place”. Here is an excerpt from the book :
“for people just waiting.
Waiting for a train to go
or a bus to come, or a plane to go
or the mail to come, or the rain to go
or the phone to ring, or the snow to snow
or the waiting around for a Yes or No
or waiting for their hair to grow.
Everyone is just waiting.
Waiting for the fish to bite
or waiting for the wind to fly a kite
or waiting around for Friday night
or waiting, perhaps, for their Uncle Jake
or a pot to boil, or a Better Break
or a string of pearls, or a pair of pants
or a wig with curls, or Another Chance.
Everyone is just waiting”
I think we all find ourselves at this place frequently, we are all waiting for something. I have two questions to consider while we are in our waiting places. How long are we willing to stay there? What will we do while we are waiting?
Today’s verse teaches us that when we are patient and strong and wait for the Lord, His Will and His plans always turn out way better than we could ever imagine. So, I suggest one possible answer to question one is to wait until we hear God’s plans instead of running off and acting on our own free will. That might be a day or two or a year or two.
This is why I ask the second question, “What will we do while we are waiting?” We can’t just sit around waiting for years. Life keeps going and we have to keep going too.
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.” (1 Peter 5:6) So, while we are waiting, we need to humble ourselves. Unlike the “waiting place” where people were just waiting for a “better break” or “a Yes or No”, we need to continue to live. Praising and worshiping God for his Grace and Goodness, through the valleys, the mountains, and the waiting.
What are you waiting on today and are you willing to wait for God’s word? What are you doing while you are waiting?
Thank you for the times of waiting in our lives. Give us the strength to humble ourselves to your timing and your Will for our lives. May we give you the praise for all things.
